Learning how to throw any knife correctly begins with proper body action. Start with your weight on your right foot, your arm drawn back past your right ear, and the knife pointed downward. Take a long step forward with your left leg, transferring your weight to your left leg. At close range, the handle should be pointed toward the rear, so you’re aiming your blade at your target and not your arm. To execute a full-spin throw, double your distance from the target and strike the knife at your elbow.

In this style, you should stand half a step behind your target. Then, turn your body in the opposite direction of your target. Then, keep the opposite arm of your dominant side closer to the target than the other arm. For example, a right-handed person should stand with their left shoulder forward and their right arm back. Their back foot should be one step ahead of their front foot, like they’re half a step to the target.

Once you’ve mastered this position, you’re ready to move onto the next style. This is the 1/2 spin. You’ll need to get a little closer to your target, but not so close that you lose your oomph. This style requires a different grip. Your index finger should be placed along the back edge of the handle, and the rest of your fingers should curl over to the handle. Once you’ve achieved this, raise the knife, releasing it with the tip of the blade pointing upwards.

When you use a diamond sharpening rod, it is important to remember the right angle to apply the pressure. This is because you don’t want to push too hard. If you use too much pressure, the blade will get bent. So, to sharpen a blade, you should start with a small angle. Count the number of circles on one side, then repeat the same process on the opposite side.

A fine-grit sandpaper is preferred for this step because it will remove more material faster, while coarse-grit sandpaper is needed to smooth out the scratches. The medium-fine sandpaper is the best for maintaining a kitchen knife’s edge. You should start from the tang and move down the length of the rod, using light to moderate pressure. Try not to push too hard, as this may cause the rod to scrape off the diamond dust, which will reduce its life span.

When using the diamond sharpening rod, you must remember to use the correct angle. Make sure that the rod is held at a 45-degree angle, so that it can easily slide into the knife. Once you’ve done this, turn the knife upside-down and start applying light to moderate pressure. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, as this will scratch the rod and reduce its lifespan. And always remember that it is more important to apply moderate pressure when sharpening your knives than to apply too much pressure.
